Kenyan graduate Michael Munoru took the long route to Australia.
He first came to Macquarie on a Study Abroad semester from the United States. Two years later he was back for a Master of Economics and has never left!
He says, “Students at Macquarie get the double whammy: you get a good degree and you get a good quality of life. I wouldn’t trade the experiences I’ve had for anything in the world.”
Michael chose Macquarie for the type and diversity of its courses. He says, “I wasn’t stuck in a stream – there were a lot of options. It was also a challenge, and I appreciated that.”

Upon graduation he was offered a position as Economics tutor at the Sydney Institute of Business and Technology, and has found his passion. “I fell into teaching, and have realised that I really enjoy it.”
“I like seeing that spark in a student’s eye when the information sinks in. Economics can be fairly complicated and when they finally understand it, it’s a beautiful thing to see,” he says.
Sydney is a long way from Africa, but Michael has found it easy to adapt. He says, “Anyone has to be adaptable when they go to a foreign environment, but coming to Australia makes that process a lot less painful than other places. Australia is generally a happier place, and it is easier to settle.”
“There are not many African students, but there’s definitely an African community in Sydney, and it is a good support network,” he says.
