Getting settled in Sydney: a student’s tips

Studying overseas is an adventure and a great life experience. But learning a new culture, speaking a different language, living on your own and making new friends can be challenging, especially when it is your first time away from home.

Macquarie organises many events, such as the Aussie Getaway Camp, for new international students to meet and make friends. (Photo: Martina Valinger)

Here are some of my tips for a happy transition to life at Macquarie.

Language

If you are from a non-English speaking country, practice at least two months before you come to Australia. Read English books, newspapers or magazines, listen to English radio and watch English films without subtitles.

It might not be easy at first, but the more you practice, the better it gets!

Find a home

Before you arrive, it is good to get familiarised with Sydney and decide whether you want to live closer to the city centre or to Macquarie campus. As the campus is about 40 minutes away from the city, consider daily travel times and transport costs.

More importantly, make your accommodation ‘homey’ by bringing personal stuff that reminds you of home (e.g. photos of family and friends); make it your own!

The International Student Services (ISS) team and student buddies are on hand to help students settle in.

Meeting new friends

One of the greatest things about going somewhere new is meeting new friends.

It is important to arrive at least two weeks before semester starts, because orientation offers many opportunities to meet other students. You wouldn’t want to miss out on that!

Keep an eye out for notices advising of networking activities the University has planned for you. Remember: many students come their own and want to make new friends.

Just relax, be open to meeting new people, make the most out of it and have fun!
