Over the past three weeks, Macquarie University Sport & Aquatic Centre has played host to Ian Thorpe and a team of nine members from the Swiss national swimming squad.
Thorpe, his coach Guennadi Touretski, and the squad, used the outdoor 50m pool and the Health Club for training while staying at the Macquarie University Campus.
Macquarie University was selected as the venue of choice by NSWIS who assisted in coordinating the camp.
For Thorpe, who is in training for the 2012 London Olympics as part of his comeback to professional swimming, it was a great opportunity to get some additional training in ahead of the Olympics trials in Adelaide in March.
It was also an added bonus that he could attend a camp on his home turf and see family and friends. Thorpe said he was delighted to be back training at Macquarie University where he studied psychology and linguistics.
“It is a great venue to train at, especially as it gives us the opportunity to use facilities such as the outdoor swimming pool and enjoy the summer sun,” he said.
The Swiss swimmers are also vying for selection to compete in the London Olympics and as well as providing a great base for training, the camp allowed the team to experience the Aussie culture.
Team Manager, Gabrillo Luka praised the country saying he enjoyed “the good beaches, high quality food and friendly people.”
Throughout the training camp there were also a number of social occasions that allowed the Macquarie University Swimming Squads to interact with Thorpe and the Swiss team.
They shared stories and swapped ideas on training, which ultimately proved to be a huge motivational boost for the Macquarie University squad ahead of the NSW State Age Championships.
