The Leiden Ranking 2011/2012 has Macquarie University ranked 202 in the world and fourth in Australia behind the ANU, the University of Melbourne and University of Queensland universities and ahead of five universities in the prestigious Group of Eight.
The well-regarded rankings are compiled by the Centre for Science and Technology Studies at Leiden University in the Netherlands. It measures the scientific performance of 500 major universities worldwide.
Using a sophisticated set of bibliometric indicators, the ranking is based on over 25 years of bibliometric experience at the Centre for Science and Technology Studies (CWTS) of Leiden University and aims to provide highly accurate measurements of the scientific impact of universities and of universities’ involvement in scientific collaboration.
Eminent US universities filled the top 10 places in the rankings, among them MIT, Princeton, Harvard, Rice, Stanford and Cal Tech.
The Leiden results follow on from Macquarie’s number four ranking in the Australian Government’s Excellence in Research for Australia initiative in 2011, highlighting the University’s growing reputation as a leader in research.
